Located within a National Historic Landmark building, the South Carolina Historical Society Museum features several exhibits sharing the works and stories of the movements, places, and individuals who shaped South Carolina, as well as the US. Though there are many reasons to visit, here are several highlights:

1. Learn about South Carolina’s earliest European settlers through hand-drawn illustrations. The earliest drawings of North America’s native fauna and flora by a naturalist, completed by Mark Catesby in 1731, feature the beautiful rice birds, also known as bobolinks.

2. Intimately connect with the South Carolinians who lived during the 19th century by viewing their scrapbooks and hand-drawn maps and experiencing their first-person accounts. The “Division and Strife” exhibit centers on the Civil War and related periods.

3. The “Charleston Recovers” exhibit displays photographs of the city during the 1886 earthquake and other natural disasters. The exhibit also includes a brief film on how these disasters inspired Charleston citizens to launch historical preservation initiatives.
